Please read the next chapters in Part IV.  Do the questions for Chapters 4-5-6.  You do not have to go back and answer the previous questions on the sheet for Chapters 1-2-3.  These were for added discussion!

Answer the following questions in a paragraph or more (4-5) sentences each.  Write on one side only.  Use additional paper if needed.

 Part IV-The White Mulberry Tree Chapts. 1-2-3.

Read Part IV The White Mulberry Tree-Chapters I, II, and III for Tuesday.  For Friday,
Chapt. IV, V, VI.  You may choose to write a detailed summary of the Chapters OR answer the following questions

Chapter 1.
1. Why does Cather go to such lengths in describing the fair?
2. Recount the most important scene in this Chapter.  What does it mean?
3. Why does Alexandra recoil from Marie as she touches her?

Chapter 2.
4.  Before Emil travels to Michigan for law school, what is the discussion about between him and Marie?
5. Is Marie really shallow-hearted?  Why did she marry Frank?
6. Does Emil’s invitation to Marie surprise you?
7. What does Emil desperately need to know?
8. Why must one of them go away?
 
Chapter 3.  One Week Later
8. How does Emil disclose to Alexandria his feelings about his brothers?
9. Why does Alexandria tell Emil about their father as a young man?  Why does Emil once again recount the story of the duck?

 Chapter 4.  The Next Day
10. Why does Amedee ignore his illness?

Chapter 5.  The Same Night
11. What has happened to Amedee?
12. What is Marie feeling about Emil’s not coming to tell her about the death?  Describe her mood?

Chapt. 6 Confirmation and Death
13.  Discuss the contrast between the youth on horseback to escort the Bishop to the church and the scene the riders encounter at the graveyard.
14. Emil sees Frank and thinks about Marie as the music in the church gives him a revelation.  What is it?
15. Why is each of them ready for the scene at the end of this chapter?   Were you ready?
